Located about halfway between Ponca and Jasper, Arkansas, off Highway 74, this campground is a solid launch point for exploring the river, tackling some tough hikes, or just enjoying nature.
Getting there requires a bit of effort—the gravel entrance road is pretty rough, so a high-clearance vehicle or even 4-wheel drive is recommended. That being said, I have personally made it down there and back in a Honda Civic however I do not recommend it and pending rainfall levels prior or ruts in the road it may be impossible at any given time. Kyle’s Landing is a year-round campground with 33 first-come, first-served sites. For $20 a night, you’ll get a site with a picnic table, fire ring, and lantern hook. Trash pick-up is available, but keep in mind that the water system and flush restrooms are only available from March 15 to November 14. During the off-season, there’s no fee to camp, but you’ll have to make do with a vault toilet and no running water.
This place is all about simplicity—tent camping only, with no RVs or pull-behinds allowed. If you enjoy a quieter, more down-to-earth camping experience, this is your spot. Just be aware that it can get busy, especially in peak season, so if you’re looking for peace and solitude, Kyle’s Landing might not always deliver. However, if you don’t mind a few neighbors and enjoy camping with others who love the outdoors, you’ll fit right in.
What to Do at Kyle’s Landing
One of the biggest draws to Kyle’s Landing is its prime location along the Buffalo National River. Whether you’re into kayaking, canoeing, or just a refreshing swim, the river is right there for you to explore. With scenic views and calm waters, it’s the perfect spot to relax or spend a day paddling.
If hiking is more your thing, you’re in luck. Kyle’s Landing offers direct access to some of the most exciting trails in the area, including the infamous Eye of the Needle hike. This trail is not for beginners—it’s a tough and sometimes dangerous trek that’s well-known for its slick rocks, narrow paths, and steep drops. Local hikers often emphasize the importance of being prepared, with one saying, “More than one person hasn’t come back from that hike. The steep drops close to the trail can be pretty unforgiving, especially when the rocks are wet.”
The hike up to the Eye from Kyle’s Landing is considered the safest route, though it still requires a good level of fitness and confidence on rocky terrain. Approaching from the top is even trickier and can feel more like a canyoneering adventure, with steep slopes of loose gravel and the occasional need for rappelling gear. But whichever route you take, the destination is worth every step. After navigating the steep, challenging sections of the canyon, you’re greeted by the sight of a waterfall pouring out from a cave high in the cliffside. As you continue upward, you eventually find yourself looking up at the Eye—a narrow, vertical rock arch near the top of the canyon, resembling the elongated eye of a needle. From below, the rock formation frames the sky and offers a striking contrast against the rugged cliffs, making it a rewarding sight for those who reach this breathtaking landmark.
Hiking the Eye of the Needle is a serious challenge, especially when the trail is wet from recent rains. The best advice? Be cautious. Wear shoes with solid tread, bring plenty of water, and make sure someone knows where you’re headed, as there’s no cell service in the area. One local hiker summed it up well: “If you’re fit and sure-footed, it’s definitely worth it, but respect the trail—people have gotten hurt out there.”

Kyle’s Landing may not offer complete solitude, but for some campers, that’s part of the appeal. With only 33 sites, the campground tends to fill up, especially in the warmer months.
