Welcome to the first installment of our Ozarks Campground Series! We know that finding the right spot to camp can sometimes feel overwhelming—especially when you want to make sure the facilities match your needs and you’re close to the activities you want to enjoy. To help you plan your next outdoor adventure, we’re starting with one of the gems of the Buffalo National River: Steel Creek Campground.
Facilities at Steel Creek Campground
Steel Creek offers a variety of camping experiences in a beautiful natural setting, with two distinct areas:
- Tent-Only Camping: The main campground features 26 tent-only sites for campers looking to enjoy the simplicity of tent camping.
- Equestrian Camping: There are also 14 sites specifically designed for campers with horses or other stock animals. Each site allows up to six people and four stock animals, providing ample space for those looking to explore the area on horseback.
While the campground does not offer electrical or water hookups, it provides essential amenities such as flush restrooms and water spigots, available seasonally from approximately March 15 through November 14. During the off-season, the campground remains open free of charge, but the water spigots and flush toilets are shut down, with pit toilets available instead.
Natural Features
One of the highlights of Steel Creek is its proximity to the majestic Buffalo National River. As one of the few undammed rivers remaining in the lower 48 states, the Buffalo cuts its way through massive limestone bluffs and provides opportunities for stunning views, from quiet pools to swift-running rapids.
The campground is also nestled beneath the towering Roark Bluff, a favorite backdrop for photographers and nature lovers alike. Whether you’re an avid hiker, paddler, or horseback rider, the natural beauty of Steel Creek will leave a lasting impression.
Recreational Activities
Steel Creek Campground is the perfect basecamp for a wide variety of outdoor activities. Whether you’re here for a weekend of relaxation or looking to fill your days with adventure, the campground offers:
- Canoeing & Kayaking: When the water levels cooperate (typically in spring and early summer), the upper portion of the Buffalo River offers thrilling paddling opportunities. Be aware that water levels can fluctuate depending on rainfall, so it’s best to check conditions before launching.
- Hiking: The nearby Buffalo River Trail runs right through Steel Creek, offering both day hikes and longer backcountry treks. For something shorter and more family-friendly, the popular Lost Valley Trail is just a short drive away in Boxley Valley.
- Horseback Riding: With dedicated equestrian sites and hitching racks, Steel Creek is an excellent spot for campers with horses. Explore scenic trails while enjoying the peace and solitude of the surrounding wilderness.
- Camping & Stargazing: End your day by the campfire under a canopy of stars, free from light pollution. Steel Creek’s remote location offers some of the best stargazing opportunities in the Ozarks.
- Fishing & Swimming: The river offers opportunities to cast a line or take a refreshing dip in the cool waters of the Buffalo.
